TV Thoughts: Chuck – “Chuck vs. the Honeymooners”

April 28, 2010

After a few week hiatus, Chuck is back with the first of its additional 6 episodes that will finish off season 3.  This episode was a nice change of pace after the pretty heavy first 13 episodes of this season.  More on this episode after the jump.

TV Thoughts: NBC Comedies 4-22-10

April 26, 2010

After a three week absence, three of the four NBC comedies were back on Thursday, but because 30 Rock started its season later than the rest, there were two episodes of 30 Rock and no Parks and Recreation.  A brief look at each episode after the jump.

Trailer Alert: Animal Kingdom

April 23, 2010

The internet tells me that Australian films are going to be big critically this year.  Nash Edgerton’s The Square was shown at film festivals last year and got a considerable amount of acclaim for a low budget modern film noir.  A clip from that film was released on apple.com several weeks ago and I think it looks incredible even out of context and I hope that this film sees the light of day in Eastern Washington.  Here is the clip if you want to watch it, which I recommend ( http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/independent/thesquare/ ).  We’ll see if the film holds up as well as that clip, but critics seem to say it does.

The other Australian film that has been getting good buzz is the family crime saga Animal Kingdom.  This one premiered at Sundance earlier this year where it won the World Cinema Jury Prize: Drama.  That is pretty much all that it would take to get me interested in this film, but to all of that you add Guy Pearce who is possibly one of my favorite actors and I am certainly there.  The trailer is not perfect, the sound effect volume is too loud compared to the volume of the dialogue and the words brought up over the images in the trailer are all pretty standard for a film of this style.  But, what I do really like about this trailer are the images themselves.  To me they are pretty captivating.  They give a slight hint about the plot of the film, but mainly they serve to catch the eye and they caused me to really want to understand their context within the film.  I also think that this trailer has the best use of a lyrical song in a trailer since the trailer for the Coen brother’s A Serious Man. I don’t have the same qualms about songs with lyrics in trailers the way that I do in the films themselves, but some trailers certainly use their music better than others.  Used over the montage at the end of this trailer it was heartbreaking and perfectly complemented everything that came before it even making up for the more cliché elements.

So currently Animal Kingdom does not have a scheduled release here in the States, but Sony Pictures Classics owns the rights to distribute the film and they are looking to get it out sometime this year.  I’ll update you when I know more, but for now, here is the trailer:

Season 2 of Castle is winding down, but right after a couple of light and fun episodes comes a rather deep and emotional episode.  Thoughts after the jump.

TV Thoughts: Human Target – “Christopher Chance”

April 16, 2010

The first season of Human Target ended with a flashback to Chance’s first mission and it set things in motion for a, hopefully, exciting second season.  Thoughts on the finale after the break.

Music Review: The Classic Crime – Vagabonds

April 15, 2010

This album was just released last week, but I feel I have listened to it purposefully enough and have had enough time to make somewhat of a judgment and let you know my thoughts on the third album from The Classic Crime.  Thoughts after the jump.

TV Thoughts: Castle – “The Late Shaft”

April 13, 2010

I’m fairly certain that the plot of this week’s episode of Castle was designed as a result of the Conan/Leno fiasco in January, so it is pretty lucky that this episode aired on the day that Conan announced his new late night deal.  More on the Castle late night drama after the jump.
